As one of only 2% of independent practices in the UK owning an Optomap, our optometrists at Kathryn Anthony Optometry can capture a completely non-invasive and instantaneous high-definition, 3D panoramic image of the surface of your retina, all as part of our advanced state of the art eye examinations and for customers on our KA Care Plan.
The majority of opticians can only assess up to a 45 degree view of your retina – equating to checking just 15% of your retina. With Optomap at Kathryn Anthony Optometry, we can assess a 200 degree view, allowing 82% of the retina to be captured in just a fraction of a second. This allows our highly-trained optometrists to review your eye health in detail simply not achievable with traditional equipment. See the Optos 30-second video to learn more.
There’s nothing to worry about with Optomap. To begin, our optometrist will set the Optomap at a comfortable height for your eyes. When instructed, you will then place your left eye over the sterilised rubber opening on the Optomap machine. When in position, you will see a brief green flash. This is the Optomap scanning your retina – and that’s it, within a fraction of second, the most advanced panoramic 3D visual of your retina has been captured. The process is then repeated for your right eye.
With Optomap, the digital 3D image of your retina is created instantly allowing our optometrist to review your eye health with you during your appointment. In addition, the scans provide a permanent record, allowing for easy comparisons to be made by our optometrists at your next eye assessment.
The data captured in your retina by Optomap can not only help us assess your sight, but also crucially detect other retinal diseases (i.e. diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration) and health problems unrelated to the eye such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, some cancers, and auto-immune disorders that may otherwise go unnoticed. Early detection of any abnormality may lead to earlier and safer treatments.
Upholding our industry leading service, Optomap eye scans are offered as standard at Kathryn Anthony Optometry as part of our advanced eye examinations and for patients on our KA Care Plan. Following traditional assessment of your eyes using OCT retinal scanning, tonometry, slit lamp and visual field technology, our optometrist will assess each of your eyes with our in-house Optomap as part of your state-of-the-art eye examination

In 1992, following the loss of his 5-year old son’s sight after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment, Douglas Anderson OBE founded Optos. His dream was to revolutionise retinal imaging to prevent the same tragedy happening to future patients. And from there, Optomap was created. Today, Kathryn Anthony Optometry are proud to provide the very highest standard of eyecare within Bath and the South West – all thanks to Optomap combined with the knowledge of our highly trained optometrists. Watch the accompanying 4-minute video to learn more about Optomap.
Whilst Optomap can capture 67% more of the retina than traditional methods, this information requires skilled optometrists to fully examine and effectively assess the data. At Kathryn Anthony Optometry, our optometrists are hand-picked for their extenive experience to read Optomap scans. This level of expertise not only offers our patients the very highest standard of eyecare in Bath, but is further trusted by the Bath and Bristol eye hospital departments to assist them with patients with complex eye conditions.
